A welder is only as good as the consumables and accessories that accompany it. Each arc welding accessory plays a specific role in bead quality, operator safety, and equipment longevity. Earth clamps and electrode holders
These two elements form the heart of the MMA welding circuit. A good arc welding accessory such as the electrode holder must ensure solid contact and good heat dissipation so it does not become hot in the hand. The earth clamp, for its part, ensures the return of current: a faulty contact causes erratic arc starting and poor-quality welds. Cables and connectors
The length and cross-section of cables directly affect voltage drop and therefore arc stability. To extend your setup without losing performance, use quality welding connectors and cables fitted with Dinse-type quick connectors. An undersized cable heats up and causes the available amperage at the electrode to drop.
Coated electrodes
The electrode is the central consumable in arc welding. The choice of coating (rutile, basic, cellulosic) and diameter determines the result and the application. We offer rods and electrodes in blister packs, perfectly protected from moisture, as well as electrodes in cardboard tubes for heavier consumers. Keeping electrodes dry is essential: a damp electrode generates porosity and cracks.
Finishing and cleaning tools
After each pass, the slag must be removed. The combination of a wire brush and chipping hammer remains the essential arc welding accessory for cleaning the bead and preparing the next pass. A neat finish also requires cleaning between each run, ensuring a sound and aesthetically pleasing weld.
Safety first
Arc welding exposes you to intense radiation and spatter. No arc welding accessory replaces appropriate protection. You must equip yourself with a welding helmet with the correct shade, welder's gloves in split leather, and, for extended work, a welding jacket. Eye and respiratory protection is non-negotiable.
Optimising your workstation
To improve comfort, think about organising your workspace: a welder's trolley keeps the machine and accessories together, while a welding table with clamps provides a stable, conductive work surface. This equipment durably transforms the quality and safety of your assemblies.
Keeping electrodes dry
Among all arc welding elements, the coated electrode is the most sensitive to the environment. An electrode that has absorbed moisture generates porosity, excessive spatter, and cold cracks. The right approach is to store your blister-packed rods in their original packaging, and to keep basic electrodes in a heated drying oven that maintains a stable temperature. This arc welding accessory, too often overlooked, directly determines the quality of the weld bead. For heavier consumers, electrodes in cardboard tubes offer a good quantity-to-price ratio, provided the same storage precautions are observed.
Sizing your cables correctly
The cross-section of welding cables is a technical parameter that is far too often underestimated. A cable that is too thin for the amperage being used heats up, causes a voltage drop, and destabilises the arc. As a rough guide, allow approximately 1 mm² of copper cross-section per 6 to 8 amps. To extend a setup, use welding connectors and cables of the appropriate cross-section rather than multiplying extension leads upstream. A quality earth circuit, with a earth clamp making solid contact, completes the setup: this is the basis of a stable arc. Finally, make sure to attach the earth clamp to a clean, bare surface on the workpiece, never on paint or rust: poor earth contact is one of the most common causes of difficult arc starting and irregular welds.
