MMA, TIG, MIG MAG… the welder's hammer is an indispensable complementary tool for stick welding or arc welding. This involves adding metal to two metal parts that are to be joined together. During this operation, a kind of crust forms under the action of the electric arc; it is called the "weld bead", but also "slag". Its purpose is to protect the weld from external pollutants and allows it to cool slowly, but it must be removed at the end of operations, without waiting for the metal to cool.

The welding hammer consists of a forged steel head and a handle, generally made of wood, but also plastic or metal. The two ends of the head are different because they correspond to two different uses: the tapered end for chipping and the other chisel-shaped end for cutting. This is why it is also commonly called a chipping hammer, with its pointed chisel-shaped edge used to dislodge the slag left by welds. It should not be confused with a pneumatic drill, used mainly in construction and public works for demolition and/or excavation, to break hard materials such as concrete and stone. Steel welder's hammers are also used for straightening sheet metal and profiling metals after welding operations.

The welding hammer can also be fitted with a wire brush to remove traces of residual slag or to clean or dress the weld. This involves brushing the weld with the wire brush, making the weld shine and eliminating the small remaining traces of slag. This is a long but necessary process to ensure the production of a proper weld bead.
